Position: Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator - Upshur County

Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.”

The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator, will report to the yard office at the Equipment Division located in Upshur County. Under general supervision, this role performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. May serve as a working shop leader. Transports equipment throughout the state to construction or maintenance sites and loads and unloads equipment. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as but not limited to, a power grader, bulldozer, backhoe, track/ rubber-tired excavator, semi-trailer, skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.

Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. Assists with the Division of Highways Surplus Auction performing duties as necessary. Overnight and out of state travel may occasionally be required.

May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performs other related duties as required.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • Pay Grade 12H
    Tier 1 hourly rate: $23.5738
    • Not eligible for Tier 4.
  • Operates a hydraulic crane.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
  • Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.
  • Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
  • Adds rods or augers to drill.
  • Removes core samples from the core barrel.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
  • Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.
  • Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.
  • Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required.

• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
