BID PERIOD

July 8, 2026, to May 14, 2027

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Obey all traffic laws while operating the bus in a safe and efficient manner under all driving conditions.
  • Observe all Federal, State and Local safety regulations for school buses.
  • Maintain discipline, within county practices and guidelines, when students are on bus.
  • Assist special education students as needed.
  • Report to proper authorities any student involved in misconduct.
  • Clean and sanitize the bus regularly, both inside and out.
  • Run on time, the bus schedule as assigned to him/her.
  • Perform pre‑trip/post‑trip inspections before/after each run as prescribed by State and Local regulations.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Transport only students authorized to ride the school bus and discharge students only at stops authorized by the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on extra‑curricular school trips.
  • Report all accidents and complete all required State and Local accident reports.
  • Attend, and actively participate in, all in‑service training classes provided by State and County school officials.
  • Attend all staff meetings called by the Transportation Supervisor, and faithfully complete all records, route schedules, and other required paperwork.
  • Safely operate emergency equipment including fire extinguishers and emergency exits.
  • Perform minor clerical or reporting tasks beyond required transportation documentation.
  • Other duties and assignments as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, as deemed necessary and appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Hold a valid WV Commercial Driver's License with passenger and school bus endorsements along with a current WVDE School Bus Operator Certification.
  • Meet all training, health, and age requirements of the State and Local Boards of Education.
  • Pass a physical examination as prescribed by the State of WV, drug and alcohol testing, and State and Federal background checks.
  • Familiarize oneself with and abide by the contents of the West Virginia School Transportation Regulations.
Physical Demands

The position requires frequent reaching, bending, and head and neck movement to visually monitor mirrors, road conditions, traffic, and student behavior. The employee must be able to safely enter and exit the bus, navigate steps and aisles, and access engine compartment or exterior areas as required. The employee must be able to respond appropriately to emergency situations, including safely stopping the vehicle, communicating with students and emergency personnel, and assisting with evacuations.

Work

Environment

Work is performed primarily in a school bus and involves exposure to varying weather conditions. The employee operates a vehicle in moderate to heavy traffic and is exposed to moderate to occasionally loud noise levels. Frequent interaction with students, including those with behavioral, medical, or special transportation needs, may involve potential exposure to bodily fluids or illness‑related incidents.
