Summary
Organizes project teams, assigns individual responsibilities, develops project schedules, determines resource requirements, monitors and reports on the status of projects including cost, timing and staffing; ensures adherence to internal and external quality standards. Roles include technical project/program activities where the employee has foundational knowledge to advise on scope changes and technical aspects. Manages complex engineering projects including personnel, safety, quality, scope, schedule and budget to deliver successful outcomes.
Responsibilities- Responsible for Project Management for all stages of the project lifecycle from initiation through close out for projects and/or programs, ensuring deliverables are received in compliance with schedule. Under intermittent supervision, own medium‑sized projects; manage and implement multiple projects and modifications concurrently.
- Oversee and coordinate all in‑house and external resources for all activities related to the project.
- Ensure applicable licensing, environmental permitting, safety, code compliance, construction and stakeholder requirements are incorporated into the project during initiation through design phase.
- Develop and manage design documents/specifications, project presentations, trustee items, funding requests, budgets, forecasts, bid documents, evaluate bid proposals and make award recommendations.
- Partner with construction engineers, customers or service providers to develop/negotiating contract change orders, prepare invoices, coordinate construction sequencing and site outages, coordinate field & design changes and quality testing/inspections.
- Review and contribute to all project documentation including drawings, technical specifications, assessment reports, asset and risk registry, budgets, forecasts, invoices, schedules, variances etc.
- Perform occasional emergency response outside normal business hours.
- Support and guide/mentor lower‑level Project Engineers.
- Provide supervision of maintenance department staff and contractors, and monitor day‑to‑day work activities of the crafts. Work with planners in scheduling activities and oversee employee safety. Review job packages to ensure completeness before work performance; verify completed work, record all data/information.
Skills and Abilities
- Competency in project management of electrical, mechanical, structural and/or water projects specific to electric utility, canal/waterways, building systems, distributed energy resource and/or electric vehicle industries.
- Proven success in managing technical and commercial aspects of medium‑sized projects and programs.
- Collaborative and team‑oriented with ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
- Ability to develop project plans, timelines, and work schedules and coordinate among customers, contractors, permitting agencies, etc.
- Experience with applicable codes, standards, regulations, project budgets, costs and project management software and NYPA external stakeholders.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations, complete specifications, scope of work, reports and interdisciplinary design packages.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of experience preferred in Project/Construction Management, preferably in the utility, commercial or related mechanical/electrical industries.
- Preferred certifications:
- New York State Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 2 years.
- Project Management Professional certification or ability to obtain within 2 years.
- Design Build Institute of America certification or ability to obtain within 2 years.
- Certified Construction Manager (CCM).
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification.
- Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
- Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses.
- Ability to travel to vendor facilities worldwide to support construction activities and inspect equipment fabrication and commissioning for the required time.
