Boiler Inspector
Under the direction of a Senior Boiler Inspector, the incumbent will:
- Make scheduled regulatory safety inspections of high/low pressure boilers and boiler installations to ensure their safe operating condition.
- Enforce compliance with statutory provisions of the Labor Law and industrial rules relating to boiler operations.
- Conduct inspections as the result of complaints or accidents.
- Inspections may require climbing through small openings and climbing on top of boilers.
- Employees will be required to travel, multiple days/nights, for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, if they meet the below NY HELPS minimum qualifications.
NY HELPS Non-Competitive
Minimum Qualifications:
- Four years of commercial, residential, or military experience in boiler making, boiler installation or inspection or in the operation and maintenance of high and/or low pressure boilers including all firing apparatus and control devices.
- Substitution:
An associate degree in engineering technology, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, or mechanical technology and either two years of commercial, residential, or military experience in boiler making, boiler installation or inspection or in the operation and maintenance of high and/or low pressure boilers including all firing apparatus and control devices.
It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
55 B/C
Qualifications:
This position is designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Please provide a copy of your 55b/c letter when applying. You must meet the open competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement.
Reassignment
Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Boiler Inspector; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Boiler Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists.
70.1 Transfer
Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 SG14.
70.4 Transfer
Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Grade 12 or higher and a passing score on the Boiler Inspector exam.
Note:
Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
NYS Department of Labor does not participate in E-Verify and does not sponsor visa applications. This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment. Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment, and you will be responsible for the payment for the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to the positions that require this examination may also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments. Employees will be required to travel, multiple days/nights, for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time. Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
Additional location pay is available for the following counties:
