This role focuses on greeting and admitting patients to the emergency department, collecting demographics and insurance information, and ensuring data supports billable accounts while adhering to EMTALA and HIPAA policies.
Responsibilities- Greet and receipt all patients arriving to the main ER or ambulance entrance.
- Provide patient identification bracelets, enter data into EMR, and verify two patient identifiers.
- Register patients requiring Emergency Services promptly and efficiently.
- Perform quality assurance by reviewing registration information for accuracy and correcting delinquent data.
- Use Health Information System (HIS) to record demographics, insurance eligibility, copays, and correct registration errors at registration time.
- Scan insurance cards and patient identifications; scan face sheets arriving from other facilities.
- Obtain and witness signed consents related to registration for treatment and billing.
- Provide each patient with mandatory documents (e.g., Notice of Privacy Practices, Patient Bill of Rights).
- Collect patient responsibility/co-pays promptly after services and deposit daily co-pay collections with required receipts and reports.
- Follow observation protocol when a patient is assigned from the ER.
- Use language interpreters when the patient’s preferred language is not English.
- Support Press Ganey patient satisfaction initiatives.
- Complete work queues during downtime and assist Patient Accounts with billing accuracy and timeliness.
- Answer telephones promptly, efficiently, and professionally.
- Escort visitors and patients and provide information as needed; maintain a safe, clean, and functional workstation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED required. - Typing speed: at least 45 words per minute.
- Previous hospital experience preferred.
- Previous registration experience in a medical setting strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of medical insurance and medical terminology.
- Familiarity with electronic medical record systems; EPIC preferred.
- Detail-oriented, able to problem solve, multi-task, and cover all areas as needed.
- Bi-lingual helpful but not required.
- Onboarding: HBI one-time certification (required by 12/1/2022) during onboarding and prior to start date.
- Ability to work cohesively within the team and with clinical and environmental staff.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to speak, write, understand, and communicate in English (additional languages helpful).
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Maintain integrity in handling confidential information.
- Flexibility to adapt tasks to meet department needs and stay composed under stress.
- Exposure to chemicals as per hospital SDS; access SDS via Hospital intranet or switchboard.
- Must be able to remain at the ED reception area for the majority of an 7.5-hour shift.
- Must be able to move within the registration area and between designated ED zones as needed.
- Must be able to traverse the ED environment when assigned as Float Registrar.
- Ability to use translation phones for non-English languages; clear and concise communication with admissions via telephone for ED placements.
- Must be able to greet and assess patients arriving at ED entrances.
- Must be able to maneuver a workstation on wheels throughout patients’ rooms.
- Regularly scan insurance cards, IDs, and demographics into the HIS at registration.
Salary: $53,840.67 - $80,782.07
