Job OverviewThe Histotechnician/Grossing Technician Trainee position is for an individual who meets the educational requirements outlined in the corporate policies above, but does not have bench experience. The individual will be trained either as a grossing technician or as a histotechnician. The individual will be moved into the intern (I) job grade on a temporary basis until training is complete. The individual in this position will perform all work under direct supervision until a general and/or technical supervisor has approved the individual to work independently.
PayRange
Pay range: $22.00 - $25.00/hour; employee may be eligible to receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on third shift. Additional details will be provided if an offer is extended.
Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

This position is an entry-level grossing position. The individual will perform surgical gross examinations of small, uncomplicated specimens. The level of supervision for each specimen type will be determined by the technical supervisor and/or laboratory director.
Responsibilities- Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, perform routine and limited non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides, for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s).
- Capable of performing all duties/responsibilities of a Histology Lab Assistant.
- For Grossing Personnel Trainees – under the direct supervision of a Pathologist, Pathologist Assistant or Grossing Technician:
- Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned.
- Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable.
- Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
- Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to a Grossing Technician or Pathologist Assistant.
- For Histotechnician Trainees – under the direct supervision of a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist:
- Ensure proper tissue processing.
- Perform limited embedding and microtomy.
- Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining.
- Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
- Perform limited special stains.
- Perform specimen preparation on non-gynecological specimens, including cytopreparation, staining, cover slipping, etc. after completing training on non-gynecological specimen types. This includes specimen preparation of Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) specimens
- Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
- Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
- Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
- Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
- If training for grossing, meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Non-Pathologist Performing Gross Tissue Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.
- If training for Histology, meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Policy for Minimum Qualifications for Histotechnician and Histology Supervisor.
- Current trainee state licensure, as applicable
- 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
- Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.
- Good clerical, organizational and communication skills.
- Associate's Degree (Required)
- Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
