Position Summary
An exempt position with clinical duties. This person will function as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the department of surgery. This involves facilitating the care of surgical patients, responding to new consultations, and acting as the liaison between the surgeon, patient, and clinical team.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
- Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treats illnesses
- Consults with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of practice
- Rounds on surgical inpatients and facilitates the appropriate care
- Ability to assist in surgical procedures is preferred
- Writes notes and consultations on patients seen
- Attends multidisciplinary rounds and team discharge rounds
- Consults on surgical patients both on the floor and in the ER
- Consults appropriate specialties as deemed fit
- Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care
- Triage patient calls, evaluates patient problems and concerns, and responds to emergencies including use of CPR
- Counsels patient/family on health‑care matters
- Documents patient information and care in the medical record confidentially and may maintain a departmental statistical database for research and quality purposes
- Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
– Education & Experience Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school (highly recommended)
- Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse
- Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric)
- Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement
- Current National Certification
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) highly recommended
- Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges
- Current New York State Licensed Physician Assistant
- Current National Certification
- Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant DOP
- Master’s degree from an accredited school (highly recommended)
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) highly recommended

Physical Requirements
- Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and lifting
- May require transferring patients
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks; hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital’s SDS database and may be accessed through the hospital’s intranet or obtained from the switchboard
- High level of responsibility and heavy workload can generate stress
- Must be able to communicate verbally with patients, relatives, attending physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel
