Position Summary

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager ensures the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards. They promote a positive and professional image, serve as a role model, coach, mentor, problem solver and resource for staff and peers. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for overall operations of their assigned department, including development of department goals and objectives consistent with the hospital mission and strategic plan, management of personnel, and preparing/monitoring department budgets.

They also manage the FTE component of staffing budgets, maintain 24‑hour responsibility for nursing care on the unit, collaborate with physicians and other members of the Health Care Team to assure delivery of optimum age‑appropriate patient care, provide hospital supervision as required by the Division of Nursing, participate in development of evidence‑based standards of care for the clinical area of responsibility, assure employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures, assure that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied, participate in the performance improvement program as defined by the organization and the Division of Nursing, assure a safe employee/patient environment, maintain knowledge related to operations of their department, work collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promote the team concept within their department and hospital wide, demonstrate positive customer service, foster positive employee relations, and assure that staff adheres to the Customer Service Behavioral Standards.

They are supportive of hospital initiatives and projects and function as a positive change agent, and participate in community service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Develops and submits departmental goals and objectives aligned with the Nursing and hospital strategic plans as required by the Division Administrator.
  • Conducts interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels and terminates employees as per hospital policy.
  • Schedules staff based on budgeted staffing plan and department needs.
  • Updates FTE component of staffing budgets on a continuous basis.
  • Develops and submits operating and capital budgets and reports variances as required to the Division Administrator.
  • Assures compliance with governmental, state regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Assures completion of staff orientation, annual and ongoing competency and education requirements.
  • Provides house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Attends and participates in educational programs or activities to maintain current level of knowledge or expertise to manage department.
  • Periodically provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Participates and assures department involvement in ongoing performance improvement initiatives to support quality metrics such as core measures and patient satisfaction as required.
  • Develops evidence‑based standards of care, policies and procedures as needed for area of responsibility.
  • Ensures service excellence initiatives and achieves organizational goals for patient satisfaction.
  • Attends all meetings as required.
  • Conducts staff meetings monthly to update staff and/or address department issues and records meeting minutes for all staff.
  • Utilizes multiple methodologies to communicate information.
  • Adheres to safety standards for employees and patients.
  • Participates in committees, task forces, projects, etc. as required.
  • Submits all other work reports as required/requested by the Division Administrator.
  • Integrates patient rights and nursing ethics into work practice.
  • Adheres to the tenets of the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Delegates activities to staff according to the tenets of the NYS Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adheres to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
