Position Summary:

An exempt position with clinical duties supporting the Neonatology department and patients. This involves facilitating the care of the Neonatology patient, attending births in labor and delivery, evaluating and assessing any clinical concerns all while collaborating with the Neonatologist.

This is a full time straight nights position (7pm- 7:30 am) alternating weekends and holidays.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
  • Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treats illnesses.
  • Support the Neonatologist in attending births in Labor and Delivery which includes assessment, evaluation, and treatment of the infant
  • Respond and evaluate infants in the Transitional Nursery, Labor and Delivery, and Emergency Department when requested
  • Round on patients in NICU and facilitate the appropriate care in collaboration with the Attending. This includes evaluation, assessment, treatment, and appropriate documentation.
  • Assist Neonatologist with procedures requiring an assistant
  • Perform phlebotomy and IV access
  • Write notes and consultations on patients seen
  • Counsels' patient/family on health care matters and respond to parental queries
  • Attend multi-disciplinary rounds
  • Consult appropriate specialties as seen fit
  • Monitors therapy and provide continuity of care
  • Responds to emergencies including use of CPR
  • Consult with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of an APP's Scope of Practice
  • Documents patient information and care in the medical record, in a confidential manner, and may maintain departmental statistical database for research and quality purposes
  • Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school (required)
  • Neonatal certification in area of clinical specialty (Preferred)
  • Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Family or Pediatric).
  • Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement.
  • Current National Certification
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification (required)
  • Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and lifting.
  • May require transferring patients.
  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
