Chapter Advisor - HOSA - Future Health Professionals
The Head Advisor is responsible for directing a total program while providing instruction in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical/professional training. Beyond a degree of individual and team success, the advisor must foster moral values, pride of accomplishment, and self-discipline in student participants. HOSA is a student-led member organization providing opportunities for members to develop, practice, and refine their academic, technical, leadership, and teamwork skills to achieve a seamless transition from education to health professions.
All programs must be operated within the policies of the School Board and District Administration.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. - Certifications:
Ability to obtain a certified First Aid and CPR card with AED training. - Compliance:
Must meet all district/state requirements and complete all required compliance education training and specific rules clinics on time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Valid Montana teacher certification and employment within the Whitefish School District (specifically as a science teacher, health education/PE teacher, or nurse at Whitefish High School).
- Previous successful coaching or competition experience in the assigned activity, including previous successful experience related to health sciences.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain confidentiality regarding student and employment matters.
Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Program & Staff Leadership
- Philosophy & Strategy:
Establishes the fundamental philosophy, technical skills, and instructional techniques for the entire program. - Student-Led Guidance:
Assists student leaders in establishing a Program of Work (activities, projects, and events), identifying implementation resources, and carrying out leadership responsibilities. - Meeting Supervision:
Provides supervision for student-led business meetings and educational programs, and encourages student leader participation in the Fall Leadership conference and state officer communications. - Professional Development:
Encourages professional growth through clinic attendance and the study of new theories/procedures. - Chain of Command:
Operates within the administrative line of command, referring all requests or grievances through the Activities Director and Principal.
Administrative & Financial Management
- Budgeting:
Participates in the annual budget process and is strictly responsible for operating within approved appropriations. Provides guidance for fund-raising activities and supervises the financial handlings of the chapter. - Affiliation & Registration:
Completes state/national member affiliation processes and registration for the annual state leadership conference. - Scheduling & Logistics:
Assists the Activities Director in scheduling contests/events, facilities, and transportation (including tournaments, conferences, and special events). - Compliance Documentation:
Ensures all participants meet eligibility requirements, including paid activity fees, current physical examinations, insurance coverage, concussion awareness, and drug testing consent prior to the first practice/meeting. Distributes and maintains records of official HOSA and school district permission and medical release forms. - Inventory & Equipment:
Responsible for marking, issuing, storing, and reconditioning all equipment and competitive materials. Conducts annual inventories and holds students accountable for lost or damaged school property. - Facility Oversight:
Examines facilities before and after use for safety and hygiene; ensures the building is secured (lights, locks, windows) by being the last to leave.
Student Welfare & Conduct
- Supervision & Safety:
Provides constant supervision and safeguards by being present at all practices, contests/meetings, and during all travel (including strict discipline in facilities, hotels, restaurants, and on buses). - Academic & Moral Growth:
Monitors student-athletes'/participants' grades and conduct; fosters moral values, pride of accomplishment, and self-discipline. Models professionalism and encourages students to exhibit professional communication and behavior. - Competitive & Career Guidance:
Provides guidance in the selection of competitive events, career exploration, and community service projects. - Injury Management:
Completes formal reports for all injuries and maintains immediate communication with the athletic trainer and Activities Director. - Future Planning:
Assists students in their college or advanced educational selections and recruitment processes.
Compliance & Regulations
- Governing Bodies:
Operates the program in strict accordance with State and National HOSA guidelines, School Board policies, and District Administration. - Mandatory Training:
Maintains valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification and completes all required training, association modules, and specific clinics on time. - Rules Interpretation:
