Level Restoration Engineer - Whitefish, MT

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consulting & Engineering is seeking a Staff-Level Restoration Engineer passionate about ecosystem restoration and water resource engineering. The position will be based in Whitefish, MT, and involves stream restoration, dam removal, and fish passage projects, requiring a solid understanding of applied hydraulics, hydrology, and geomorphology. Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology/hydraulic modeling is a plus. The role involves occasional travel (about 10%) to assess project sites, collect field data, and meet with clients.

This is a full‑time, permanent, hourly, benefits eligible position with two staff levels:
Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer (up to a year of relevant experience) and Staff Restoration Engineer (at least two years of experience).

• Conduct field work to assess existing site conditions, reference reach sites, and perform geomorphic surveys.
• Participate in engineering design, reporting, and development of construction plans for restoration of streams, wetlands, and floodplains.
• Conduct engineering analyses to support the development of dam removal and fish passage designs.
• Write clear and concise technical documentation of engineering analyses.
• Develop project management skills.
• Adhere to the safety program and promptly communicate and mitigate safety hazards.
• Represent SWCA and pursue professional development at industry conferences.
• Work independently in a fast‑paced environment, meeting set deadlines.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or Ecological).
• Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and analysis software.
• Up to one year of ecosystem restoration design experience.
• Up to one year of experience in ecosystem restoration and/or related internship.
• Engineer‑in‑Training certification.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• Experience developing ecological restoration design construction plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Experience with survey equipment and techniques.
• At least two years of design experience.
• Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

Hourly rates:
Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer — $26.75–$34.78;
Staff Restoration Engineer — $30.50–$39.59. Pay may vary based on experience and location. Regular‑status employees are eligible for performance bonuses and SWCA’s Total Rewards package, which includes competitive benefits.
