Job Description

Position: Head Coach

Reports To: Activities Director and Principal and/or Superintendent

Summary of Assignment: The Head Coach is responsible for directing a total sports program (K-12) while providing instruction in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training. Beyond athletic success, the coach must foster moral values, pride of accomplishment, and self-discipline in student-athletes. All programs must be operated within the policies of the Montana High School Association (MHSA), Western A Conference By‑laws, the School Board, and District Administration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certifications: Ability to obtain a certified First Aid and CPR card with AED training.
  • Compliance: Must meet all MHSA requirements and complete NFHS Coaches Education Training and MHSA Sport Specific Rules Clinics on time.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Montana teacher certification and employment within the Whitefish School District.
  • Previous successful coaching or competition experience in the assigned sport.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain confidentiality regarding student and employment matters.
Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

Program & Staff Leadership

  • Staff Supervision: Supervises a cohesive staff of assistant coaches and recommends assignments to the Activities Director.
  • Philosophy: Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for the entire K-12 program.
  • Professional Development: Conducts staff meetings and encourages professional growth and clinic attendance among assistants.
  • Evaluation: Analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants within two weeks of the season's end.

Administrative & Financial Duties

  • Budgeting: Participates in the budget process and is responsible for operating within appropriations.
  • Equipment: Responsible for marking, issuing, storing, and reconditioning equipment, as well as maintaining an annual inventory.
  • Scheduling: Assists the Activities Director in scheduling contests, transportation, and facilities.
  • Compliance Documentation: Ensures all athletes have insurance, physicals, and paid activity fees prior to participation.
Student Welfare & Conduct
  • Academic Monitoring: Gives constant attention to student‑athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Supervision: Provides guidance and safeguards by being present at all practices, games, and during travel.
  • Injury Reporting: Completes reports for all athletic injuries and communicates immediately with the athletic trainer.
  • Discipline: Maintains discipline on buses and in locker rooms, ensuring the coach or a designee is the last to leave the facility.
Public Relations
  • Communication: Organizes parent meetings and maintains positive relations with the news media, booster clubs, and fans.
  • Recruitment: Promotes the sport within the school to non‑participating athletes and fosters relationships with youth feeder programs.
Physical and Mental Demands

Work Environment: The employee constantly works around others, works with the public, and works inside and outside. The noise level in the work environment varies, but it is frequently loud. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

Physical Demands: The employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this position. The employee will occasionally be required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
