This is a contracted position that works up to 29 hours a week and no benefits are offered.

Position Definition

The Classroom Nurse will provide Health and Classroom support services to students in classrooms to assess, document, and manage the health care needs of students, assist classroom staff in the support of students during the school day in CLIU programs, and recognize symptoms and consequences of safety and environmental factors.

Relationship

The Classroom Nurse is directly responsible to the Assistant Director of Special Programs and Services under the clinical guidance from the Certified School Nurse.

Qualifications Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing (BSN).
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification.
  • Valid PA Registered Nurse License.

  • Demonstrates a proficient understanding and utilization of Microsoft Office Suite and other software packages for use in the Special Program and Services Department.

  • Ability to travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support.
  • Ability to exhibit appropriate manual dexterity to effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to conduct a safety restraint protocol which requires:
    • a normal degree of flexibility;
    • the ability to stand, walk, run, and shuffle for at least several minutes;
    • the ability to kneel on one and two knees and then stand up;
    • the ability to bend the trunk at 45 degrees and twist to either side;
    • the ability to grasp firmly and raise hands above the head;
    • the ability to learn and correctly demonstrate multi-step physical skills.
Authority

The Classroom Nurse will have the authority to perform all functions listed below in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities

Essential
  • Provides direct health care services, including, but not limited to, assessing, documenting, and managing the health care needs of children in the classroom.
  • Collaborates with Certified School Nurse in regards to medical concerns of specific students in IU classrooms, as directed.
  • Administers prescription or other medications in accordance with doctor’s order and CLIU protocols.
  • Participates and collaborates in IEP meetings for students that require health care services during the school day, as directed by Program Supervisor.
