You must already be OPOTA police certified to be hired for an Auxiliary police position.

The Auxiliary Police Officer, at the Chief's discretion, may be assigned to independent duties such as special patrol functions, special duty, prisoner transport, subpoena/summons delivery, and manpower back-up. The Auxiliary Police Officer will also function for such duties as special Christmas Patrol, special Halloween Patrol, special enforcement actions, special guard duty, certain parades, certain City‑Park functions, and other occasional duties required by the City.

The Auxiliary Police Officer may be appointed to a certain rank within the Auxiliary structure in order to better facilitate the Auxiliary Police Force mission. The position is non‑classified under Civil Service, is appointed by the Director of Public Safety, is assigned under the control of the Chief of Police, and reports directly to an appointed Auxiliary Liaison Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Sometimes drives a police vehicle, rides a bicycle or walks, patrolling a designated area
  • Regularly reports unsafe conditions such as obstructions in the streets
  • Sometimes patrols a designated area to enforce State Laws and City Ordinances
  • Answers calls for service as required
  • Investigates complaints as required
  • Takes action as necessary to prevent crime and/or to apprehend criminals
  • Regularly maintains public safety
  • Regularly assists citizens in a wide range of emergency and non‑emergency situations
  • Regularly issues citations for violations of traffic laws
  • Regularly makes arrests, sometimes requiring the use of force and physical exertion
  • Sometimes transports prisoners
  • Usually assists in investigating vehicle accidents, determining causes and other pertinent facts
  • Conducts investigations of crimes, preserves crime scenes, gathers and preserves evidence as requested
  • Regularly checks doors and windows of homes and businesses for security
  • Testifies in court as subpoenaed to do so
  • Assists injured persons, notifies families of injuries as needed
  • Sometimes assists in procuring blood, urine and other bodily fluids as evidence
  • Assists stranded motorists as encountered
  • Regularly investigates conditions which may indicate a crime is about to be or has been committed
  • Maintains records and prepares reports as requested
  • Regularly works with juveniles and school authorities
  • Consistently maintains good public relations
  • Directs, enforces and regulates traffic as assigned
  • Regularly responds to radio messages or telephone instructions
  • Intervenes in private or public disputes to protect citizens and to maintain order as directed
  • Prepares for the prosecution of criminal offenses involving individuals who have been arrested as requested
  • Sometimes procures medical treatment or social services for individuals and may be required to transport individuals to these facilities
  • Assists in investigating delinquency, mental illness cases and cases involving missing persons as requested
  • Carries out court orders, delivers subpoenas, and executes warrants as assigned
  • Regularly slates, searches, questions and escorts prisoners
  • Prepares written reports of gathered facts as needed
  • Regularly consults with and reports to the assigned Supervisor on all pertinent issues concerning duties and the business of the Division of Police
  • Continually assists in the maintenance of cooperative relations among Division of Police personnel
  • Continually assists in the maintenance of cooperative and efficient relations between the Auxiliary Police Force and the various Bureaus and entities comprising the Division of Police
  • Continually assists in the maintenance of cooperative relations between Division of Police and outside persons and entities
  • Regularly assumes the responsibility and authority as Officer‑in‑Charge when so designated, or when rank or seniority causes this to happen; in other words, the senior‑most Officer is usually in‑charge at the scene and, thereby, has the responsibility and the authority as such
  • At the discretion of the Chief of Police, Auxiliaries may also be assigned regular, individual duties to perform in an effort to efficiently and effectively accomplish the mission of the Division of Police. These duties may…
