Youth And Family Prevention Coordinator

To provide substance abuse prevention services to youth, families, and community members funded by the AHCCCS Substance Use Block Grant (SUBG). The Youth and Family Prevention Coordinator will coordinate prevention-based services to client, families, school personnel, and community stakeholders. Provides guidance for the development of prevention programs, defined as proactive processes that empower individuals and systems to effectively navigate life challenges, transitions, and significant life events.

The Youth and Family Prevention Coordinator will create and reinforce conditions that promote healthy lifestyles and behavior through the use of evidence-based practices, with culturally appropriate adaptations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits and supervises program volunteers, maintain documentation of all services in the program.
  • Coordinates youth substance abuse prevention services utilizing evidence-based curriculums.
  • Organizing community-based engagement meetings, parent substance abuse awareness groups, youth led social media campaigns.
  • Coordinating youth/elder storytelling media and incorporating cultural activities for youth (burden baskets, camp dress making, storytelling, cultural foods).
  • Incorporating the evidence based or evidence informed curriculum.
  • Perform responsible alcohol, tobacco, and other drug training, facilitation, and alternative activities targeting selective youth. These services will also deliver related services to older adults and develop environmental strategies to impact communities as a whole.
  • Develops public service announcements. Participates in speaking engagements, health fairs, conferences, and other health promotion activities as designed by program supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the schools and communities to facilitate substance abuse prevention services. Services include prevention education, alternative activities, information disseminations, problem identification and referral, community-based process.
  • Network with other prevention and social services agencies within the region to include prevention, intervention, treatment, mental health, to provide comprehensive services, identify needs and make referrals as necessary.
  • Provide information sessions for parents, teachers, staff, or tribal entities when requested.
  • Document all program activities as required, submit reports and records according to the agency's and grant guidelines.
  • Provide in-service training to staff on topics appropriate to expertise, interest, and knowledge.
  • Attend training, seminars, workshops, and classes as required by the agency.
  • Assist in community outreach, which includes but it not limited to substance abuse awareness campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week, health fairs, business expos, parades and other community events for the purpose of building community awareness and cooperation and providing anti- use messages.
  • Must conduct a minimum of 30-minute alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, presentations for youth and adults with an educational goal, that is objective specific to prevent or reduce use among youth and adults.
  • Must facilitate age-appropriate prevention alternative activities (minimum 30 minutes in length) that that teach and/or reinforce skills that promote a healthy and substance-free lifestyle that include an education goal and objective to prevent or reduce substance use/abuse.
  • Implements programs designed to provide growth experiences and offer exposure to healthy activities designed to deter use/abuse of violence, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • Implement family based programming.
  • Develop parenting education and family activities.
  • Abide by all applicable policies, procedures, and program standards of ABHS, White Mountain Apache Tribe, Indian Health Services, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and other pertinent regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain ethical policies and guidelines as outlined in accepted State ethics laws, rules, policies, and principles and as outlined in discipline-specific code of ethics.
  • Provide a positive role model to clients and staff through leadership, self-discipline, and genuine care for the treatment and recovery of clients. All clients and staff members must be treated with dignity and respect.
  • Reports/attends work in timely manner. Must be reliable and communicate directly with supervisor in all matters of attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or assistant director.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • Possession of a high school diploma with minimum of four years' work-related experience in mental health field engaged in case management, mental health, developmental disabilities, aftercare, substance abuse or related areas; AA/Bachelor's degree in mental health/human services or related field preferred. Experience working with Native Americans preferred.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to speak the Apache language preferred.
