Overview

The Recreation and Culture Department is seeking 1-2 Special Event Set-Up Assistants to join their team on a Casual basis. This is manual work of some complexity and responsibility in setting up and taking down special event equipment at various indoor and outdoor recreation and culture activities within the City. The successful candidates are responsible for following written instructions and set-up maps to set up and take down special event equipment.

As well, they must operate a light weight, heavy duty or box truck; load, transport and unload materials, tool, equipment and supplies; operate truck with attachments to tow stage and parade float; and drives parade float on highways to various parades outside the City. Duties are performed within established guidelines under general supervision, but some independent action and initiative is exercised and subject to constant review by a superior.

The successful candidates also delivers and sets up the stage; may moves stage by hand to final set up location using an electric motor, as required; installs chain hoists, sound and lighting after stage is set; and ensures support weight and load of stage is supported with stairs and scrims. Sets up sound system and lighting as required; and ensures that it is operational.

Also provides feedback and recommendations on outcome of special event set-ups to a superior.

Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work and considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Requirements
  • Sound knowledge of set-up procedures and equipment used in special events at various indoor and outdoor locations within the City.
  • Sound knowledge of business English, spelling, arithmetic and punctuation.
  • Ability to safely work at heights and climb ladders.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, to resolve problems and to make decisions in accordance with the applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, staff and officials in supplying information, providing direction and assistance related to recreation and special events.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to function effectively during busy periods.
  • Ability to follow written directions, read set-up maps and sequential instructions.
  • Ability to safely and effectively set up a stage. Ability to operate a light weight, heavy duty or box truck.
  • Ability to hook up and tow stage, and to tow parade float on highways and outside of City limits.
  • Ability to use tools such as ladders, wrenches, drills and screwdrivers.
  • Ability to set-up portable sound system and ensure that it is operational.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and walk up to 2 kms continuously.
  • Ability to move heavy objects.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Availability to work on days, evenings, and/or weekends;
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent with a demonstrated safe driving record;
