Overview

If you’re a hardworking individual with strong safety awareness, great customer service, and the ability to perform physical work in all weather, we want to meet you! Reporting to the Manager of Public Works, you will support the City’s solid waste operations, including relief driving for garbage, green waste, and recycling collection. You’ll also assist with general Public Works duties such as road and sidewalk maintenance, sewer and water system work, concrete and asphalt installation, sign installation, and the safe operation of small tools and equipment.

Working knowledge of MMCD standards is an asset.

Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with job-related experience including experience operating small equipment used in the performance of public works construction and maintenance duties, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Considerable experience or training and knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions applicable to the work;
  • Class 5 Driver’s license with Air Endorsement and proof of a safe and responsible driving record;
  • Class 3 Driver's License or higher is an asset.
  • Any additional Public Works related training, including experience in working in excavations, pipe laying, and working around underground utilities.
  • Intro to Public Works, Water Distribution Level I, or Wastewater Collection Level I is considered an asset.
  • Any level of Occupational First Aid (OFA) training is considered an asset. The incumbent will be required to obtain a minimum OFA Level 1 certification.
Requirements
  • Ability to operate public works maintenance equipment including hand and power tools such as compressors, jackhammers, and cut-off saws and small and large power equipment;
  • Ability to shovel, rake, and compact hot mix asphalt;
  • Ability to repair potholes with cold mix;
  • Ability to do final paving from large to small projects and knowledge in finishing cement, laying brick and cement block grouting and concrete making;
  • Ability to work around underground utilities, including pipe laying and working with water, drainage and sanitary service connections and mains;
  • Ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate excellent listening skills;
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public in a courteous, professional and effective manner;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and amicably in a team environment with a safety first attitude;
  • Working knowledge operating a de-watering pump is preferred;
  • In roles where respiratory protection may be required, maintaining a clean shave is mandatory to ensure proper fitting and seal of the respirator against the face, complying with applicable Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
