DPW Streets​/Parks​/Forestry Seasonal Laborer

Overview

The DPW Streets/Parks/Forestry Seasonal Laborer provides daily and seasonal maintenance for the City of Whitewater relating to its grounds, landscapes, flowers, ball fields and street upkeep.

• Installs and maintains landscapes, flower beds/baskets and identifies diseased plants and foliage.
• Operates a variety of equipment such as pickup trucks, mowers, specialized turf mowing, and trimming equipment.
• Performs maintenance on mowers, trimmers, and other lawn care equipment.
• Assists with street/park maintenance such as catch basin repair, asphalt placement, pavement crack filling, concrete work, flagging operations, brush collection, tree work, and garbage collection.
• Assists with weekend baseball/softball tournaments including ball field preparation, concession stand, and general grounds cleanup.

• Must be at least age 16.
• One or more years of horticulture experience is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Prior experience using light equipment and motorized maintenance vehicles desired.
• Strong attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices.
• Ability to meet deadlines for daily operations.
• Professional and appropriate responsiveness when interacting with the public.
• Professional appearance and proper wear of work attire. Closed-toed/closed-back shoes are required (steel-toed shoes in some cases); seasonal staff wear T-shirts and long pants; safety vest provided as needed.
• Comfort working with heights and confined spaces.
• Proper and safe operation of light and heavy equipment and tools, including trimmers, weed whips, irrigation systems, and hand tools.

• Good physical strength and stamina.
• Ability to walk, use fingers to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to operate, maneuver, and adjust equipment, machinery, tools, and materials.
• Ability to recognize differences in colors, odors, shapes, and textures related to job tasks.
• Ability to exert physical effort from sedentary to continuous activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, and climb.

• The work environment is generally moderately quiet, with hearing protection required in some areas.
• Work may involve exposure to environmental factors with limited risk of injury.
• May involve working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
• Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including wet or humid conditions and temperature variations.
