Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for providing swimming lessons in accordance with the provided curriculum and maintaining constant supervision of any students to ensure their safety in the water. Swim Lesson Instructors develop positive, nurturing relationships with swimmers and families, as well as working and communicating with other WAFC employees.
Shift Times: Wednesdays 4:15-6:30pm;
Saturdays 9:15am-12:15pm;
Additional shift times may be available for private lessons or based on program growth.
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary.
- Monitor and direct participants in proper and safe use of swimming equipment and exercises.
- Maintains constant surveillance of class participants around the water.
- Choose fun and appropriate activities to reinforce swimming skills based on curriculum
- Set up and clean up pool area as needed.
- Keep storage room neat and orderly.
- Inform WAFC staff when maintenance and purchasing of equipment is necessary.
- Inform WAFC staff of custodial needs related to cleanliness of the pool and pool area.
- Follows and enforces the policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatics Manual.
- Has knowledge of the emergency action plan.
- Assists lifeguards during emergencies according to established procedures.
- Reports issues to the Aquatic/Fitness Coordinator or the WAFC Manager and assists in documenting issues.
- Assists with pool activities and concession stand when needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Red Cross WSI required within 12 months of hire.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required within 120 days of hire.
- Prior swimming experience.
- Knowledge of water safety principles.
- Ability to communicate orally, clearly, patiently and tactfully with participants.
- Ability to exercise judgment in the abilities or constraints of participants in a swimming lesson.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to always maintain positive behavior and professional demeanor; address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
- Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.
- No formal supervisory responsibilities.
- Overall supervision and direction are provided by the Aquatic/Fitness Coordinator and WAFC Manager.
