Position Title:
SUBSTITUTE PARAPROFESSIONAL – Class 4 Specialist/Behavioral Program
Effective Date:
Includes any 1:1 paraprofessionals that are academic supporting a student
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Certified
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Restraint Trained
- Assist with toileting
- Support students requiring de‑escalation, time outs, and/or restraints
- Support student on behavior intervention plans (BIPS) through data collection and reinforcement under the supervision of classroom teacher and/or BCBA
- Support Discrete Trial Training (DTT) under the supervision of classroom teacher and/or BCBA (includes Special Education, Regular Education, and Title I)
Paraprofessionals shall meet the requirements of a “Highly Qualified” paraprofessional as described in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The minimum qualifications include:
- A high school diploma or equivalent,
- An Associate’s (or higher) degree; OR
- Evidence of completion of 48 credit hours at an Institution of Higher Education; OR
- Evidence of completion of one of the formal Massachusetts‑endorsed assessments:

Building Principal or Designee
The primary purpose of instructional paraprofessionals is to support both teachers and students in activities directly related to education. Essential functions include:
- Assist in the education and social development of students under the direction and guidance of general or special education teachers.
- Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for students and monitor progress.
- Provide support for identified students both inside and outside the classroom to enable them to participate in activities.
- Assist in administration of state/district wide assessments.
- Implement special strategies as required by supervisor.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Perform all clerical duties as directed by supervisor.
- Manage student behavior under the direction of supervisor.
- Demonstrate personal career development through in‑service/other training opportunities as provided by the Whitman‑Hanson Regional School District.
- Be capable of physically assisting students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, crisis prevention, etc.).
- Assisting students with transition to/from transportation.
- All other duties as assigned.
- At least 2 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Associate degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
