Job Description

Atlas is seeking a licensed professional Deputy Grading Inspector (LADGI) authorized by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) to oversee grading and earthwork activities on construction sites within the City of Los Angeles. This role ensures that all grading operations comply with approved plans, geotechnical engineering recommendations, and local building codes.

Core Responsibilities

The LADGI’s primary role is to monitor and verify that grading and earthwork work is performed in accordance with:

  • Approved grading/shoring plans
  • Soils and geology reports
  • City approval letters

Typical daily tasks include:

  • Observing excavation and fill placement to ensure proper depth, width, and compaction
  • Monitoring soil compaction to prevent settlement and structural damage
  • Checking fill materials for suitability and compliance with specifications
  • Reporting field conditions and any deviations from approved plans
  • Liaising with contractors and engineers to resolve issues promptly
  • Preparing daily inspection reports for the design professional and LADBS
  • Identifying and mitigating risks such as slope instability, poor drainage, or unsuitable soils
Primary Responsibilities – LADGI Duties
  • Interpret and apply Geotechnical Soils Reports and Grading Plans
  • Observe/inspect caissons, piles, and piers for shoring applications
  • Conduct lithologic analysis of artificial fill, native soils, alluvium, terrace deposits, and bedrock during pile drilling
  • Perform shoring lagging and slurry inspections
  • Oversee tie-back anchor drilling and testing
  • Verify footing and trench bottoms
  • Monitor slot-cut operations and conduct soil density testing
  • Provide full-time grading oversight for LA City Designated Hillside Projects
  • Conduct compaction testing using nuclear gauge and/or sand-cone methods
  • Assess temporary slope stability and setbacks
  • Observe sub-drains, rock pockets, and back drain installations
  • Collaborate with City of LA Deputy Inspectors and enforce municipal codes
You’ll thrive here if you have
  • Experience
    : 2–5+ years in grading or earthwork inspection
  • Skills
    :
    Strong field presence, problem-solving, communication, and knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles
  • Valid CA driver’s license and insured personal vehicle (capable of handling jobsite terrain
  • Current City of Los Angeles, Deputy Grading Certification Required
  • Ability to perform sand cones and have your own sand cone kit
  • Ability to read grading and construction plans and specifications
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally
  • Computer knowledge and experience
  • Ability to work standing/walking for long periods of time and willing to travel during standard business hours
