Educational Sign Language Interpreter I - III
The educational sign language interpreter provides manual and oral communication services for Deaf and Hard‑of‑Hearing students, faculty, and hearing parties within the college. The role is filled on a part‑time, temporary basis as assignments emerge across the institution.
Responsibilities- Attend classes, lectures, workshops, meetings, and other events alongside Deaf students or faculty to interpret or translate academic and non‑academic information.
- Participate in guidance sessions, tutoring, and student activities to facilitate classroom discussions, activities, and ancillary communication.
- Promote cross‑cultural communication by demonstrating an understanding of Deaf culture.
- Support full interaction and independence of DHH students.
- Maintain current professional status through workshops, continuing education units, and other relevant training.
Education and Experience
- High school graduation or GED.
- Completion of an associate degree in a related field or at least twenty (20) units of accredited college‑level coursework with documentation of continuing education units from a professional interpreting maintenance program.
- Recognized sign language certification or license with completion of at least one of the following:
National Interpreter Certification (NIC);
National Association for the Deaf (NAD) level III or above;
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpretation (CI) or Certificate of Transliteration (CT); or completion of an accredited Interpreter Training Program (ITP) certificate.
- Minimum of three (3) years of paid experience at the college level interpreting or transliterating complex academic material.
- Completion of an interpreter training program.
- On‑ground and/or online classroom environments.
