VOALA (Volunteers of America Los Angeles) is a non-profit human services organization dedicated to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. VOALA provides services including Head Start, Upward Bound, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing, and substance abuse rehabilitation.
Pay rate: $19.02 - $20.02 per hour. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
Job SummaryThe Monitor is an entry-level security position responsible for protecting program premises, ensuring safety for program clients, visitors and employees. Driving ability is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities- Shelter Security
- SHELTER ENTRANCE MONITORING:
The front door to the shelter is the only permitted entrance and exit for participants, employees, partners, and vendors. Monitor and authorize entry and departure to guard against theft and maintain security of premises. - BAG & PERSON SCREENING:
Monitor and search all participants’ person and belongings brought into the shelter. Treat every participant with equal dignity and professionalism during screening. - Patrol premises to prevent and detect intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates; walk the facility and report as needed.
- SHELTER ENTRANCE MONITORING:

- Observe shelter operations; report and correct spills, unsafe conditions, or defective equipment.
- Know location of fire exits and assist participants in emergencies.
- Monitor clients, conduct room checks, maintain records of compliance with program rules, and report to clinical/case management staff as required.
- Call police or fire department in emergencies.
- ASSET PROTECTION
- Protect shelter assets and report suspicious events to the direct supervisor.
- Complete written incident reports and logs of daily activities and irregularities (e.g., unusual occurrences, damage, theft, unauthorized persons).
- ROLE MODEL:
Act as a role model for participants; put clients’/participants’ needs first. - CLIENT/PARTICIPANT SUPPORT
- Answer phones and take messages; monitor doors and greet visitors.
- Maintain office housekeeping; ensure common areas, laundry areas, and restrooms are clean and operational.
- Assist shelter staff during service provision (e.g., meal preparation/serving, monitor medication administration, setup for classes, meetings, and events).
- DRIVING TASKS (for licensed Monitors)
- Transport participants to locations such as human service sites, work sites, and medical facilities.
- Assist passengers with mobility devices; ensure passenger safety.
- Maintain trip records, mileage, and fuel usage; keep program vehicle in good operating condition and arrange routine maintenance.
- Maintain program vehicle and equipment after each use; comply with safety protocols.
- Services must be provided on-site; incumbents report to work on-site each workday.
- SHELTER SECURITY:
Monitor entrance, screen bags/persons, patrol premises. - SHELTER SAFETY:
Monitor clients, conduct room checks, report rule violations; observe for safe operations and conditions. - ASSET PROTECTION:
Complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities. - CLIENT/PARTICIPANT SUPPORT:
Drive participants as directed (for licensed Monitors); other duties as required. - Act as a role model for participants at all times.
All employees are considered Mandated Reporters and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.
Qualifications Requirements- Must pass fingerprint clearance and background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications.
- Ability to work under emotional stress and with difficult or aggressive clients in programs serving homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, incarceration, and related challenges.
- Within 30 days of hire, must successfully complete VOALA safety training.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current California driver’s license with clean driving record and knowledge of CA driving laws
- Database familiarity
- Clean driving record compatible with VOALA insurance
