Position: Equipment Service Worker (06-26)

Equipment Service Worker

WILL CLOSE AFTER RECEIPT OF THE FIRST 150 QUALIFIED APPLICATIONS OR JULY 1, 2026, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. Under general supervision, performs routine service work, preventative maintenance inspections, and minor mechanical repair work of City vehicles and equipment; maintains appropriate work records, including City vehicle repair and inventory records; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties;

performs other related duties as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Equipment Service Worker is the journey level class responsible for the most routine service work and preventative maintenance inspections performed on the City's vehicles and equipment. This class is distinguished from the Fleet Mechanic I in that the latter is responsible for the skilled and semi-skilled mechanical repair work for the City's vehicles and equipment. SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Receives general supervision from the Fleet Manager or Fleet Mechanic Supervisor. May exercise functional and technical direction over training personnel.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(include but are not limited to the following) Performs routine service of City vehicles and equipment. Performs preventative maintenance inspections on the operational condition and drivability of City vehicles and equipment. Performs minor mechanical repair work on city vehicles and equipment, such as light bulb changes, oil and lube work, brakes, tire and wheel changes, shocks and strut replacement, interior repairs, etc.

Cleans and maintains supplies at the fuel island; performs repairs on hoses, reels, and dispensers. Cleans vehicle and equipment exteriors; vacuums and cleans interiors, cleans windows, windshields, and mirrors; cleans ashtrays and removes trash. Participates in the general maintenance of the shop area. Steam cleans engines; performs routine service, including, but not limited to, greasing, replacement of oils and filters, spark plugs, lights, or wipers;

charges batteries; changes and repairs tires; cleans wheel rims, identifies and reports major repair and maintenance problems. Maintains records and reports relating to equipment servicing. Transports vehicles to and from other City departments, or to and from vendors; obtains estimates for vehicle damage repair and inspects work for completion and quality; performs service calls; picks up parts. Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, State/local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public.

OTHER DUTIES: (include but are not limited to the following) May present alternative work methods to improve effectiveness and efficiency and makes recommendations regarding equipment replacement. Assists other Public Works divisions when required; answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action. May be exposed to confidential and privileged information during the course of duties, which should be maintained as such.

Working Conditions:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 75 pounds or more are also required.

Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, work at heights over 10 feet, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

The incumbent may be required to respond to after hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
