Deaf Education Teacher

Provide deaf education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability and communication levels. Work in self-contained, team, inclusion departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Bachelor's degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required deaf education endorsements for assignments

Proficiency in sign language (ASL, PSE, SEE, etc.) as determined by program needs

Knowledge of specific needs and instructional methods for students who are DHH

Understanding of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process and IEP goal development

General knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and differentiation strategies

Ability to interpret and apply audiological data (e.g., audiograms)

Knowledge of Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) and personal hearing devices (cochlear implants, hearing aids, etc.)

Ability to administer and interpret communication and language assessments

Effective communication, consultation, and collaboration skills

At least one year student teaching or approved internship

Collaborate with students, parents, and staff through the ARD process to develop and implement appropriate IEPs for assigned students.

Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional, therapeutic, or skill-development programs aligned with each student's communication and learning needs.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques, activities, materials, and technology to support diverse learning styles and ensure accessibility.

Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify curriculum and provide support in inclusive settings.

Participate actively in ARD meetings, providing updates on student progress, accommodations, and instructional recommendations.

Maintain accurate documentation of instruction, data, and progress toward IEP goals.

Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal measures.

Support students in developing communication, academic, and social skills that promote independence and self-advocacy.

Encourage participation in extracurricular and school activities, facilitating communication access when needed.

Serve as a positive role model and support the mission and goals of the school district.

Create and maintain an environment conducive to communication and learning, appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Manage student behavior in accordance with IEPs, including implementing positive behavior supports and crisis intervention strategies as necessary.

Collaborate with teachers and staff regarding classroom behavior plans and student management.

Consult district and community resources regarding students' educational, social, or medical needs as appropriate.

Establish and maintain open, professional communication with parents, students, administrators, teachers, interpreters, and paraprofessionals.

Provide consultation and training to general education teachers and staff regarding DHH accommodations, communication strategies, and use of Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT).

Collaborate with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and related service providers to support student needs and ensure coordinated services.

Communicate clearly and effectively in spoken, written, and signed formats appropriate to each situation.

This position may or may not include duties of Early Childhood Intervention (ECI), which involve providing professional home visits and consultation to families of hearing-impaired children between the ages of 0–3, based on each family's and child's respective needs.

Collaborate with ECI providers to plan appropriate services and assessments.

Participate in the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) process and assist with identified evaluations for the child and family.

Model and coach families in strategies to support auditory, speech, language, and early learning development.
