The psychiatric hospitals provide recovery‑oriented, science‑based care for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric needs.
The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I (PNA I) performs entry‑level to routine rehabilitative patient services under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsibilities include providing emergency, health, and personal care; interacting with patients therapeutically; observing, reporting, and documenting patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record; and participating in individualized and unit‑based programming. The PNA I maintains direct therapeutic interactions with patients to promote living and social skills, encouraging progress toward a less restrictive environment.
As a member of the recovery or admissions team, the PNA I documents patient behaviors and progress toward individualized goals, participates in shift reports and recovery team meetings, performs nursing duties within competency, and works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.
The role is non‑financial but accountable for assigned property. Duties may change and may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. HIPAA compliance is required for limited record access.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- Attend work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift, rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Takes an active role in implementing individualized recovery plans and offers consistent, ongoing support to help patients reach their goals.
- Uses therapeutic, person‑centered communication skills to engage patients promptly and effectively.
- Assists with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self‑care; accompanies patients to appointments as required.
- Communicates effectively with other team members to promote a positive workplace.
- Serves as a participant in the recovery or admissions team, providing ongoing collaborative verbal and written communication concerning patients.
- Uses basic computer and documentation skills to communicate patient care information clearly and concisely in a timely manner.
- Assists the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration or treatment, including taking and monitoring vital signs and performing other assigned tasks within competency level.
