Google’s Hardware Operations team monitors the state‑of‑the‑art physical infrastructure that powers Google’s search technology. As an Operations Technician you will install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware such as servers and their components, as well as server software such as Google’s Linux cluster.
You will also configure complex components—including networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols—participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations, and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks; the work can be physically demanding but offers the opportunity to engage with cutting‑edge infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Perform component‑level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
- Lift and move up to 50 lb (23 kg) of equipment and perform required physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and lifting.
- Work non‑standard hours, including weekends, nights, holidays, and shift‑based schedules.
- Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across projects or functions.
- Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose straightforward equipment or infrastructure issues.
- Maintain security and integrity of data, tracking various media types to check for standard data security issues in accordance with Google security standards.
- Disassemble specific equipment that has reached its end‑of‑life via part replacement or maintenance within a team setting.
- Repair, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions and limited guidance.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Completion of the online Google IT Support Professional Certificate program.
- At least 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
- Experience performing component‑level repairs and troubleshooting on IT equipment or in a related role such as Systems Administration, Network Deployment Engineer, or Help Desk Technician.
- Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
- Ability to collaborate and partner with teams to overcome challenges and adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment.
US: $86,000 – $119,000 (USD) + 15% bonus target + equity + benefits.
