Role

Summary and Strategic Impact

The Fabrication Detailer is responsible for converting coordinated piping layouts, approved construction documents, and project information into accurate, fabrication-ready spool drawings for the F.G. Haggerty fabrication shop. The primary focus of this role is producing clear and complete spools that give shop personnel the dimensions, materials, fittings, weld information, piece marks, and other details required to fabricate piping assemblies accurately and efficiently.

The Fabrication Detailer works closely with the Fabrication Production Manager, BIM/detailing team, Project Managers, and fabrication personnel to resolve discrepancies before release, maintain revision control, and keep spool production aligned with project priorities and shop schedules.

Core Responsibilities I. Spool Drawing Production
  • Produce accurate fabrication spool drawings from coordinated Revit/BIM models, approved shop drawings, isometrics, or contractor-provided spool sheets.
  • Break piping systems into logical, shop-fabricable spool assemblies based on fabrication capabilities, handling and shipping limitations, installation sequencing, and project requirements.
  • Include all information required for fabrication, including dimensions, pipe and fitting sizes, flanges, valves, weld locations, cut lengths, piece marks, elevations or coordinates, and connection points.
  • Generate and maintain spool packages, bills of material, cut lists, and other fabrication data required for release to the shop.
II. Fabrication Coordination
  • Review spool drawings with the Fabrication Production Manager and shop personnel to confirm constructability, practical fit-up, and efficient fabrication sequencing.
  • Coordinate with the BIM/detailing team, Project Managers, and field personnel to resolve missing dimensions, conflicts, material questions, and design revisions before fabrication.
  • Incorporate shop feedback and fabrication constraints into spool drawings to reduce rework, fit-up issues, material waste, and fabrication delays.
  • Prioritize spool production based on shop schedules, field need dates, material availability, and overall project priorities.
III. Documentation & Quality Assurance
  • Verify each spool drawing against the coordinated model and approved project documents before it is released for fabrication.
  • Check dimensions, materials, fitting types, end connections, weld locations, cut lengths, and piece marks for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain revision control, clearly identify revised spools, and help prevent obsolete fabrication documents from being used in the shop.
  • Organize and maintain fabrication drawings, spool logs, bills of material, and digital files to support traceability and production status tracking.
IV. Software, Standards & Process Improvement
  • Use Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, ProCAM, Bluebeam, and related fabrication software as required to create, review, and issue fabrication documentation.
  • Follow company spool standards, naming conventions, drawing templates, file organization, and release procedures.
  • Support development of standardized fabrication libraries, spool templates, and detailing workflows that improve speed, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Maintain practical knowledge of shop equipment, fabrication capabilities, piping standards, fitting takeouts, joining methods, and field installation requirements to improve detailing quality.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in pipe detailing, fabrication detailing, mechanical drafting, pipe fitting, or a related mechanical construction role preferred. Direct experience producing fabrication spools or working with a pipe…
