Perform advanced vocational nursing work at Wichita Falls State Hospital, providing care, treatment, and general welfare to individuals with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral health issues. Work under the limited supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) with significant independence and initiative.

• Administer medications and treatments; perform complex technical nursing procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, and breathing treatments.
• Collect specimens for lab work and conduct health screenings.
• Monitor weight, diet, vital signs, and overall health status; identify signs and symptoms of illness.
• Document accurately and timely in electronic health record or paper charts.
• Lead, monitor, and provide feedback to Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and direct support staff.
• Instruct and train new LVNs within their scope of practice; supervise on‑job training and prepare "on‑the‑job training" checklists.
• Assist RNs with protocol implementation, quality assurance, infection control, and therapeutic nursing programs.
• Participate in disaster response, continuity of operations, and emergency de‑escalation procedures.
• Provide educational and safety training to staff as required.

• Attend work consistently; work specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shift and/or overtime as required.
• Work in multiple locations within the state hospital as needed.
• Demonstrate competency in complex technical nursing tasks in accordance with HHSC, state, and facility regulations.
• Maintain up‑to‑date documentation and communication with RN case managers and primary care providers.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration to support patient care decisions.
• Lead and oversee monitoring of patients before, during, and after treatments and procedures.
• Assist in implementing quality assurance, infection control protocols, and therapeutic nursing programs.
• Respond to emergency situations and follow safety and infection control procedures.

• In-depth knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and techniques for complex cases.
• Emergency medical knowledge, including CPR and TIPS; ability to assess and care for patients in emergencies.
• Understanding of state and federal laws, intermediate care facility regulations, and hospital policies.
• Reasoning and problem‑solving skills to identify problems and implement appropriate solutions.
• Computer proficiency, including electronic health record use.
• Ability to organize, coordinate, and evaluate nursing activities; interpret policies and regulations.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, including instruction of others.
• Physical strength and flexibility to perform CPR; current CPR certification required.

• Licensed to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Graduated from an accredited LVN program.
• Minimum twelve months of LVN employment experience (eighteen months preferred).
• Six months of direct experience working or volunteering with persons with mental illness preferred.
• Six months of experience training, teaching, or leading others preferred.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility; certain centers require a minimum age of 21. Applicants must complete a background check, drug screen, and specific registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
