ResponsibilitiesPerforms highly complex vocational nursing work and provides for the care, treatment, and general welfare of individuals residing at the State Hospital with complex mental health, behavioral, and medical diagnoses. Performs basic and complex nursing tasks to promote health; collects specimens for lab work and conducts health screenings. Instructs psychiatric nursing assistants and other staff on care that supports individual needs.
Performs technical nursing procedures according to facility and state regulations. Trains and mentors new LVNs and direct care staff. Assists RNs with implementation of protocols and programs to improve health and safety. Works under general supervision of an RN with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response, COOP activation, and potential alternate shift patterns or locations. May be eligible for additional pay for evening, night, and weekend work.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work regularly and may work specific or rotating shifts, extended shifts, and overtime as needed. Administers medications and treatments, assists other medical staff, makes rounds, and demonstrates competency in complex nursing tasks. Trains new LVN staff, supports protocol implementation, and maintains health and safety of staff and individuals. Documents and reports treatments and observations timely in patient records. Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and acts as a resource/mentor for new LVNs.
Assists in infection control, quality assurance, and program implementation. Provides information and education to individuals per recovery plans. Manages supplies and inventory; responds to emergencies per hospital procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned to support agency obligations in disaster recovery or COOP activation.
Qualifications and RequirementsKnowledge,
Skills And Abilities
(KSAs): Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and patient care principles; knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment (e.g., CPR); strong problem-solving and communication skills; ability to use computer systems and electronic health records; ability to care for patients with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral health needs; ability to teach and mentor others; CPR certification required; ability to safely perform CPR and related tasks.

Certifications:
Licensed to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact. If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire; out-of-state driving records may be requested.
Initial Screening Criteria: Graduation from an LVN program; minimum six months LVN experience required, twelve months preferred; six months of experience with persons with mental illness preferred.
