Job Description

Job Title: Substitute School Nurse

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Dept./School: Health Services/Various Campuses as Needed

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt-Established Substitute RN Pay Rate

Primary

Purpose:

Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventative health practices for students.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid registered RN license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners or LVN License
  • Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision, hearing and spinal screening
  • CPR/AED Certification

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student’s health defects
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures

Experience: Minimum of two years nursing experience, preferably in community or pediatric health

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Nursing Services:

  • Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.
  • Serve as health advocate for students.
  • Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached) or as deemed necessary.
  • Coordinate management system to administer medications to students inister medications according to district policy and procedures.
  • Perform screening procedures as required by Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Educational Agency, and district policy. Make referrals and appropriate follow up as necessary.
  • Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.

Instruction:

  • Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.

Consultation:

  • Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community.
  • Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with student, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
  • Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  • Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of principal.
  • Communicate regularly with principal and health care coordinator regarding health services issues.
  • Administration:

    • Review and evaluate immunization records.
    • Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
    • Supervise and train LVN in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
    • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated electronic health records on all students.
    • Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
    • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
    • Report potential health and safety hazards to principal/designee.
    • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

    Professional Development:

    • Maintain certification in CPR/AED, vision and hearing and spinal screening.
    • Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

    Other:

    • Other related duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct the work of any assigned LVN.

    Equipment Used: Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, vision screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, AED, personal computer, copier, and fax.

    Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.
