Position Summary

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and be part of a team committed to creating a positive impact in the lives of fellow Texans. The Maintenance Specialist III performs complex work in building maintenance and construction trades, conducting inspections, adjustments, installations, repairs, and maintaining records. This role may involve operating motorized equipment, making deliveries, and providing training and guidance to others.

It requires working under general supervision with moderate independence.

Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections, adjustments, maintenance, and repair work on building systems in accordance with recognized codes and standards for trades such as plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting, and electrical.
  • Identify necessary materials, assembly details, and material/equipment costs; requisition parts and supplies.
  • Maintain safe and uninterrupted services to campus operations and program systems.
  • Test safety equipment as necessary and keep accurate records on work orders, projects, and material requisitions.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes and forklifts when required.
  • Provide training and guidance to others on proper repair and inspection procedures.
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, including alternate shift patterns or locations as needed.
Qualifications
  • Vocational training in one or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling.
  • OR minimum two (2) years’ experience in construction, maintenance, or equipment/vehicle repair work, with at least one trade for two years and six months experience in at least two other listed trades.
  • Valid Texas driver license no later than 90 days after hire, or an out‑of‑state license with a certified driving record per HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of repair, maintenance, and operations of buildings, building systems, and grounds.
  • Knowledge of building mechanical, electrical distribution, electronics, boilers, painting, and carpentry.
  • Knowledge of building materials, plumbing, and electrical fixtures.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures, HVAC, sanitation, and refrigeration.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, fire, and safety regulations.
  • Skills using hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Skills in preventative maintenance and inspections of buildings and building systems.
  • Ability to perform maintenance, follow instructions, and estimate materials.
  • Ability to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in building maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions, and use good judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Additional Requirements

Travel:
Up to 10% of the time.

Shift: Day.

Work Hours:

Flexibility may be required, including overtime and extended hours. Employment:
Full time, Regular, Nonexempt.
