Overview
Transportation Maintenance Tech II or III - Special Crews. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in the Wichita Falls District seeks a General Transportation Tech II or III for the Special Jobs Crew. The role involves working on roadway construction projects and operating light and heavy equipment.
The position level (Tech II or Tech III) will be determined based on the applicant's experience, education, skills, and business needs.
Responsibilities- Perform routine transportation operations or maintenance support, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergencies.
- Follow standard practices with limited supervision and complete required reports (time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI).
- Operate complex heavy equipment (e.g., motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine) as applicable to Tech II duties.
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., front-end loader, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, dump truck) and operate light equipment (e.g., front-end loader 1.25 cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
- Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, assist the public, and perform other duties during emergencies (floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, hazardous material spills).
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work meets project specifications.
- Train other employees.
- Perform PMI, routine servicing and minor repairs, and complete required reports.
- Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, assist the public, and perform other duties during emergencies.

Education requirements align with the Tech II/Tech III levels as defined below.
Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT)TMT II = 1 year experience; TMT III = 2 years experience
* Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and CertificationsMust have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License.
CompetenciesRequired for Transportation Maintenance Tech II: Considerable knowledge of inspection methods, basic vehicle mechanics, safety standards, coordinating labor/materials/equipment, prioritizing and organizing work, and using computers and applicable programs/systems.
Additional competencies for Transportation Maintenance Tech III: Extensive knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work; familiarity with plans, specifications and estimates; knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; proficiency in public relations and operating light and heavy highway equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions- Must wear protective gear (including respirator, hard hat, steel-toed boots) and may use other equipment.
- Subject to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazards from moving vehicles and machinery, and hazardous materials.
- Medium work:
Lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. - Ability to walk, stand, crouch, bend, kneel, reach, hear, and see to operate vehicles/equipment and assess facilities/structures.
- Pre-employment physical may be required. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety-impact positions and be subject to random drug testing.
