Position Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations related to the company’s property management portfolio. This role ensures financial accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting while leading the accounting team and supporting strategic decision-making. The Director of Accounting plays a critical role in protecting company and client assets and scaling accounting processes as the portfolio grows.
Key Responsibilities Financial Oversight & Reporting- Oversee all accounting functions for managed properties, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and financial close.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal leadership.
- Ensure accurate trust accounting and compliance with state and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee annual budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, including assisting management in hiring, training, and performance management.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Foster collaboration between accounting, property management, leasing, and operations teams.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
- Coordinate audits, reviews, and tax reporting with management and external accountants when needed.
- Monitor risk, internal controls, and fraud prevention measures.
- Oversee property management and accounting software systems.
- Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Implement best practices as the portfolio and organization grow.
- Provide financial insights to leadership to support operational and investment decisions.
- Assist with onboarding new properties, ownership changes, and portfolio transitions.
- Support growth initiatives, acquisitions, and special projects as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong experience in property management or real estate accounting.
- In‑depth knowledge of trust accounting and owner reporting.
- Proficiency with accounting and property management software.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
- CPA designation.
- Experience scaling accounting operations in a growing organization.
- Multi‑entity and multi‑owner accounting experience.
