Distinguishing Features of Work

This is professional supervisory work directing, analyzing, and interpreting central accounting and/or auditing activities. Work can include the planning and supervision of one or more components of the City's accounting and account-keeping functions, financial reporting, and auditing. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.

Workdays and Hours - Monday
- Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm OR Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 6:30pm

Anticipated starting salary: $61,184 - 84,984 (based on experience and qualifications). Bargaining Unit: Employee Council

Examples of Work Performed
  • Ensures compliance with accounting principles and procedures as set forth by the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
  • Prepares more complex annual audit work papers for review by senior Controller's Office staff.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of assigned components of the accounting system and recommends and implements modifications as required.
  • Manages electronic financial information system application development, modification, and validation processes.
  • Prepares complex financial statements and presents analytical analysis to senior Controller's Office staff.
  • Monitors, reviews and propose corrections for assigned financial funds.
  • Provides accounting, reconciliation, reporting and bookkeeping assistance to department staff for assigned funds.
  • Develops forms and procedures and supervises employees engaged in processing and maintaining a variety of records.
  • Setup, monitoring and close out of grants and projects in the financial system of the City.
  • Assist staff in other departments to ensure the City's main financial system is properly reconciled with department third-party systems.
  • Periodically presents ideas to senior Controller's Office staff for areas of improvement within assigned duties and carries out improvements upon approval.
  • Interprets financial data for administrative review.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting and/or auditing principles and practices, and ability to apply and adapt standard methods to varied and complex accounting and/or auditing activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of, and ability to use computer keyboard and video display monitor in spreadsheet development, using complex mathematical and statistical operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of macro systems in electronic spreadsheet development.
  • Knowledge of the theory and procedures of governmental and utility accounting.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and implement accounting and auditing systems and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees, representatives of outside agencies, City officials, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.

Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting OR an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license with a bachelor's degree in accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Economics.
  • Two (2) years of experience performing accounting and/or auditing functions.
  • One (1) year of financial systems experience.
