Job Story

WSU Libraries is seeking a student assistant to provide reception for the University Libraries Dean’s Office. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm. Afternoon availability preferred. Position is year-round, including Spring and Fall breaks, Intersession, and Summer semester, excluding Holiday Shutdown in late December.

Job Summary

A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties
  • Answering telephones, referring calls, and/or taking accurate messages.
  • Providing office reception.
  • Preparation of word processing and spreadsheet documents.
  • Taking inventory and stocking the supply room as well as processing special orders for supplies.
  • Copying and assembly of various materials, and filing.
  • Processing of books and other library resources to be put into circulation.
  • Working on special projects throughout the library.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Education

High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.

Additional Requirements
  • Attendance every day as scheduled is a must, except for pre-approved scheduled time off.
  • Ability to lift 20-25 pound boxes to shelf or table.
  • Ability to move supplies to and from Central Services in Morrison Hall.
  • Ability to move books on carts and shelves.
  • Excellent oral communication skills for answering phones and interacting with visitors to the Dean’s Office.
  • This position will handle confidential documents and information and must maintain that confidentiality.
  • The position requires attention to detail, whether you're reading call numbers to shelve books or cutting out printed marketing materials.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite specifically Word and Excel.
  • Training on specific duties will be provided, must be able to work with minimal supervision after training.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators.
  • Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
