Summary:

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200 000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after reviewing the application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications
:
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school for the year the degree was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or D.C.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty leading to board certification.
  • Board certification may be required for VA physicians involved in academic training programs.
  • Residencies may be ACGME or AOA approved or other residency programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S. deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residency-trained physicians currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs that would otherwise meet basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and do not receive privileges; instead they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
  • PRPs may also be surgery residents in gap years.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred:
    Emergency Department experience.
  • Physical requirements:

    light lifting under 15 lb, light carrying under 45 lb, pushing for 1 hr (varies), reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking 4 hr (varies), standing 4 hr (varies), rapid mental and muscular coordination, near‑vision 12–16 inches Jaeger 1–4, hearing (aid permitted), working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours, night shifts.
Duties

The incumbent is responsible for providing Emergency care and stabilization services to Veterans at the Robert J Dole VA Medical Center (VAMC). The physician will provide direct patient care, guide mid‑level providers in the Emergency Department, and participate in interdisciplinary team activities to ensure high‑quality patient care. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, coordinating care within and outside their service line, performing consultations, providing clinical care, graduate medical education, and scientific research as appropriate, and remaining available for emergency interventions.

Work schedules typically run from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm or 8:00 pm to 8:00 am; night shifts are shared equally among physicians, and the selectee may be scheduled to cover at least two weekends in a six‑week period.
