Job Description and Responsibilities Purpose

The Associate Pastor of Adult Discipleship is an integral member of the Shepherding Team at Metro East Baptist Church. Together with the pastors and active lay elders, this team is entrusted by the congregation to lead the Word and Prayer ministries of the church and to provide unifying oversight to the whole of the church’s life of worship, ministry, and fellowship.

The Associate Pastor of Adult Discipleship is responsible to oversee the full scope of discipleship ministries at Metro East for members above high school age – developing appropriate strategies, resources, and programs for equipping God’s people to carry out the work of ministry and to grow together as one body to spiritual maturity in Christ. This position will lead and oversee all key discipleship initiatives of the church, including internal (teaching and service) and external (evangelism, missions, and compassion) ministry works.

The Discipleship Pastor serves as staff director for the Connections Team.

Competencies & Expectations
  • Vibrant, mature, and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ evidenced by personal speech and conduct as well as testimony of those in close relationship to him.
  • Strong belief and commitment to the wholly inerrant teaching of the Bible and its role as sole authoritative source for Christian faith and practice.
  • Understand, embrace, and commit to teach in agreement with and not in contradiction to Metro East’s designated statement of faith, the Baptist Faith & Message (2000) of the Southern Baptist Convention.
  • Possess strong desire to serve the Lord through faithful and sacrificial leadership of God’s people in the pastoral role.
  • Advanced understanding of biblical teaching and descriptions of spiritual growth in the church and in the lives of individual believers.
  • Organizational and administrative ability to skillfully oversee multiple ministry leaders, volunteers, and programs.
  • Commitment to work in cooperation and support with other staff members, elders, and other ministry volunteers.
Essential Job Functions
  • Serve alongside MEBC staff pastors and lay elders to provide spiritual teaching, care, guidance, and protection for the whole church body.
  • Oversee the whole discipleship strategy and ministry activity for adults.
Collaborate with Senior Pastor to define, develop, and implement Metro East’s “Abiding Discipleship” model for ministry and fellowship.
  • Oversee the Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF) Classes: evaluating and approving teaching curriculum; recruiting, training, and resourcing teachers; coordinating engagement of new members and attenders to join classes; directing strategic ministry endeavors to organize and launch new classes as needed.
  • Guide and mentor Men’s Ministry and Women’s Ministry Leadership Teams to lead well-planned ministries for discipleship and fellowship that align with the vision and priorities of the church.
  • Develop and oversee a strategic ministry plan for local, national, and international Great Commission engagement, collaborating with other staff, the MEBC Missions Committee, MEBC volunteer ministry leaders, and outside ministry partners as needed.
  • Facilitate the work of the Connections Ministry Team to develop a clear and effective plan for welcoming visitors, forming initial connections, and guiding them toward appropriate next steps: including believer’s baptism, church membership, ABF enrollment, and service in ministry.
  • Meet regularly with staff pastors for concentrated prayer and strategic ministry discussion.
  • Manage relevant discipleship-related budget lines, including collaborating with the Finance Committee to plan discipleship-related lines in annual budget planning.
Education & Experience
  • At least 3 years of pastoral ministry experience in a local church setting
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Seminary training is preferred but not required.
