Position: Toddler Assistant Teacher (Early Learning Center) - East YMCA

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the classroom Teacher in implementing weekly lessons and activities, and monitor students' developmental progress.
  • Follow posted lesson plans and classroom schedule as directed by the Teacher.
  • Participate in planning sessions.
  • Record observations related to developmental progress and behavior concerns, as directed by the Teacher.
  • Facilitate children's learning through active participation and encouragement.
  • Assist children with feeding, changing, and other care needs.
  • Supervise playground activities.
  • Parent Communication

  • Maintain positive and open relationships with families.
  • Greet parents by name upon arrival and departure.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors and successes to parents and children daily.
  • Document behavior concerns and communicate them to the classroom teacher.
  • Redirect parent concerns to the Teacher and/or Director.
  • Classroom Organization

  • Manage classroom supplies and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Complete attendance and food service records accurately.
  • Maintain a conducive environment for smooth transitions and independent learning.
  • Keep storage areas organized and tidy.
  • Follow cleaning schedules and maintain all postings and children's work neatly displayed.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and clean environment

  • Lift and carry children as needed.
  • Follow guidelines for food service, cleanup, and storage.
  • Complete incident reports promptly, have them signed, and provide copies to parents on the day of the incident.
  • Support discipline practices in line with YMCA policies and KDHE regulations.
  • Follow individual behavior plans for children as directed by the Teacher.
  • Report injuries immediately and document details.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect immediately.
  • Assist with toilet training and respond to accidents.
  • Help set up and supervise family-style meals and snacks, and sanitize tables and floors after meals.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Follow dress code and maintain appropriate attendance.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Model and uphold the four Character Development aspects:
    Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Caring.
  • Complete required inservice hours as per KDHE and instructions from the Teacher/Director.
  • Understand and support the program's philosophy, policies, procedures, and goals.
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of program management experience; social service or behavior management experience preferred.
  • CPR, AED, First Aid, and O2 certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Attend NEO training within 30 days of hire.
  • At least 6 months of experience working in licensed child care.
  • PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Effective communication skills (visual, auditory, verbal).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, squat, and perform light physical activities repeatedly.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and create an encouraging environment.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
