Position: Assistant Dean for Clinical Education

Job Description

This person should have an informed vision of excellent clinical experiences that our medical students and future alumni will need. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Education will need good interpersonal skills to successfully work with various professionals in this process. While responsibility is for the clerkships, the individual will have senior administrative collaborators.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Lead the creation of clinical clerkships that will fulfill the requirements of the curriculum of Kansas

    COM as well as satisfy the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) core and required clinical requirements for clinical Education.
  • Work with other members of the administration to ensure that the COM has a 120% capacity of the class size for all core and elective rotations as identified by the Dean/Chief Academic Officer (CAO).
  • Ensure that all clinical rotation-related elements are ready at a reasonable time (as determined by the Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum, Clinical Medicine & Graduate Medical Education (Sr. Associate Dean) prior to medical students entering clinical training.
  • Ensure that all clinical rotations for medical students are appropriate, high-quality, produce the curriculum as established by Kansas

    COM and fulfill all accreditation standards.
  • Oversee the quality improvement efforts of the COM for clinical rotations locatons and faculty to ensure their effectiveness.
  • Establish metrics to evaluate student and clinical preceptor performance and to ensure that each clinical site provides a compatible clinical experience for the student.
  • Assist the Sr. Associate Dean in developing, implementing, and overseeing student and clinical site assessment, evaluation and testing processes and logistics for the clinical portion of medical student training.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee processes and procedures for the selection and implementation of clinical rotations. Develop, implement, and oversee the process for assessment and continuous improvement of the clinical portion of the Student Handbook and Academic Catalog, the Clinical handbook and academic policies and procedures applicable to clinical education and present recommendations to the President’s Cabinet’s for potential approval.
  • Foster a positive culture amongst the preceptors.
  • Serve on selected committees at the discretion of the Sr. Associate Dean.
  • Supervise the administration of subject exams and clinical curriculum content delivery.
  • Work with CFO and other financial personnel to advance prompt payment of clinical faculty/preceptors per organizational policies.
  • Assist the Sr. Associate Dean in accreditation functions, including document creation, data collection, data entry, education of faculty on accreditation, and other accreditation-related tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversees various Clinical Faculty, the Chair for Primary Care, Chair for Medical Specialties, Core Site Directors, and the Director of Clinical Rotations and staff.

Qualifications
  • Possess a medical degree, DO or MD, with a strong background in medical education at a Pre-doctoral COM based institution or Post-doctoral GME program. Preference will be given to candidates with a DO degree and those with prior experience as an associate/assistant/dean at a osteopathic medical school.
  • Experience developing online, hybrid, flipped classrooms, and other innovative learning experiences is preferred.
  • Previous experience serving as a faculty mentor.
