Position: Para educator - Vocational Special Needs (MSHS)

Primary Purpose

Assist in the supervision, instruction, and care of special needs students while supporting them at various vocational and job sites so that students can complete job functions and achieve independent living goals.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • Drivers license and evidence of insurability required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to instruct students and manage their behavior; ability to present information one‑on‑one, in small groups, and in large groups.
  • Job‑related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
Major Responsibilities And Duties
  • Adapt vocational skills to provide opportunities for all special education students at different learning levels and/or with functional limitations to participate in programs and prepare for independent living.
  • Adapt life skills for the same purpose.
  • Administer first aid, daily living care, mental health support, and medical and non‑medical assistance to provide appropriate care and develop students’ daily living activities and behavioral skills.
  • Assist students in practicing job skills to reinforce learning.
  • Maintain documents, files, and records (e.g., daily log, reports) to record progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with staff to provide support, information, and evaluate student progress or implement IEP objectives.
  • Support the integration of natural supports at job sites to help students be as independent as possible.
  • Monitor special education students to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions and meet state requirements.
  • Support off‑site learning and leisure trips to prepare students for independent living.
  • Provide feedback and daily records to communicate students’ progress to the transition team.
  • Support special education students at job sites to help them learn their duties.
  • Report incidents to maintain student safety, a positive learning environment, and compliance with state law and school policies as a mandated reporter.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

  • Tools/Equipment Used:
    Standard office equipment including computer and phone; standard classroom technology including computer, peripherals, and embosser.
  • Posture:
    Some pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing; frequent standing, walking, and/or pushing/pulling.
  • Motion:
    Significant climbing and balancing, fine finger dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
  • Lifting:
    Frequent lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds.
  • Environment:
    Primarily indoors; some outdoor student supervision.
  • Mental Demands:
    Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, solve problems, make decisions, and remain flexible.
  • Attendance:
    Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality as required by Board of Education policies and regulations.
  • Clearances:
    Background check, current TB test, driver's license, and evidence of insurability required.
