This job description provides a general outline of duties and qualifications of the position. Other duties may be assigned, and the description may be changed at any time. It is not intended to limit normal change and growth nor prevent employees from working to ensure the success of our endeavors.
Position DescriptionThe Medical Skills Instructor is a temporary part-time staff position within the KHSU-Kansas
COM to report to the Director of the Simulation Center. Instructors serve students currently enrolled in Kansas
COM by assisting with educational trainings and to achieve necessary certifications. The primary responsibility of a medical skills instructor is to support students to obtain necessary certifications and skills prior to clinical rotations. Skills instructors provide individual and/or group skills trainings to students based on their personal area of expertise. Instructors can be utilized to meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help students become proficient in skills.
Skill Instruction supports classroom-centered activities. Skills Instructors may have opportunities to educate the greater Wichita community through skills classes and trainings, such as CPR classes.
- Manage and prepare individual and/or group skills training sessions.
- Deliver curriculum for medical students on various clinical skills and procedures, including but not limited to physical examination, patient communication, medical procedures, CPR, and Stop the Bleed.
- Maintain the classroom space used for teaching, including ensuring equipment is in good working order and the space is clean and organized.
- Recognize and utilize study techniques within the different learning styles and student preferences.
- Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
- Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of skills trainings.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve instructional skill and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills.
- Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice.
- Recognize the primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners.
- Be direct and kind with students at the same time.
- Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success.
- Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed.
- Facilitate problem-solving with a curious mind and critical thinking skills.
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree.
- Basic Life Support Certified.
- In good academic standing.
- Screened and deemed an appropriate candidate by Student Affairs.
- Passed all courses.
- Passing grades in all current courses.
- Has not remediated any courses.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and comprehension skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
- Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage professional and interpersonal relationships and interact effectively with diverse members of the institutional community and outside constituencies.
- Commitment to diversity in the workplace.
- Skills Instructors will typically be offered 4-12 hours in trimester 6, depending on availability and need. Additional hours on an as needed basis.
- Complete data entry tasks using required database software.
