Overview

Telecommunications Mechanic II (MCCONN-):

Bowhead seeks a skilled Telecommunications Mechanic II to support mission‑critical Base Telecommunications System (BTS) operations at McConnell Air Force Base. This position provides advanced technical support for the operation, maintenance, and sustainment of inside and outside plant telecommunications infrastructure, including copper, fiber optic, and voice systems. The Telecommunications Mechanic II will support Avaya voice switching systems and associated telephony equipment while ensuring secure, reliable communications in compliance with Department of Defense and Air Force requirements.

This role requires a DoD‑compliant IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+) and the ability to respond to outages, perform preventive maintenance, and execute work orders supporting 24/7 operational readiness.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include:

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Base Telecommunications System (BTS) infrastructure supporting mission‑critical voice and data services.
  • Provide technical support for Avaya voice switching systems and supporting equipment, including user provisioning, call routing, translations, gateways, and associated telephony components.
  • Support VoIP and SIP‑based telephony environments
    , including analog and digital circuits, gateways, and customer premise equipment.
  • Perform inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) telecommunications work, including installation, termination, splicing, testing, labeling, and repair of copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Respond to and restore telecommunications outages, alarms, and trouble tickets within required timelines to ensure continuity of operations and mission readiness.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs) on telecommunications infrastructure; identify deficiencies, document findings, and perform corrective actions.
  • Perform cable location, staking, and marking activities in support of excavation, construction, and dig permit requirements while ensuring safety and accuracy.
  • Install, modify, and remove telecommunications circuits, cross‑connects, and disconnects; verify proper service restoration following maintenance or work completion.
  • Test and certify copper and fiber optic cabling using approved test equipment and accurately document test results and maintenance actions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including work orders, trouble tickets, inspection records, cable test results, and telecommunications infrastructure records using approved systems.
  • Provide technical input and field support for engineering reviews, site surveys, and infrastructure modifications related to telecommunications projects.
  • Comply with all security, safety, and environmental requirements
    , including DoD and installation policies; properly use PPE and follow confined space, electrical, and underground utility safety procedures.
  • Coordinate effectively with Government personnel, supervisors, and team members to prioritize work, communicate status, and maintain professional conduct on a military installation.

Qualifications
  • Education
    • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate required.

    • Completion of formal technical training in telecommunications, electronics, information technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.

    • Military technical training (U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or National Guard) in communications, electronics, or information systems may be substituted for civilian technical education.

  • Years of experience
    • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience performing telecommunications installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.

    • Experience must include hands‑on support of enterprise or mission‑critical telecommunications systems
      , including voice, data, and networked communications.

    • Demonstrated experience working with inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) infrastructure, including copper and fiber optic cabling systems.
