Flint Hills Resources is seeking a self‑motivated, entrepreneurial individual with high integrity and strong planning skills to work as a Automation & Controls Engineer within our Pipelines and Terminals ICE engineering team.

We are looking for a candidate who is contribution‑motivated, fosters teamwork, and can find solutions in the absence of rigid specifications and standards. A high level of initiative and critical thinking will be essential as you manage technical projects and communicate solutions to customers, peers, and management.

This role may be based in either Rosemount, MN or Wichita, KS
.

Our Team

The ICE Engineering Team (Instrument, Control, Electrical) is a group of approximately 17 Electrical Engineering professionals that provide design, implementation, and commissioning support for 4,000 miles of pipeline, 30 refined‑fuel and asphalt terminals, and 30 fertilizer terminals. The team is responsible for all electrical matters and manages both power and control systems design.

What You Will Do
  • Design, implement, and commission terminal instrumentation, automation systems, process control solutions, and electrical power distribution systems
  • Perform PLC/HMI programming, equipment configuration, design, and drawing reviews
  • Manage electrical and automation projects from scope definition to commissioning support
  • Develop and maintain standards and best practices related to electrical and control system design
  • Integrate process control equipment with other process and business systems
  • Provide 24/7 production support and troubleshooting for pipeline and terminal automation systems
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Technical or bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering with 3+ years of work experience, OR 5+ years of experience programming PLC systems
  • Willing and able to be part of a 24/7 on‑call rotation (Typically 5 weeks/year)
  • Willing and able to travel 10‑25% of the time (travel averages around 10% but can have sustained peaks above that, driven by project schedule and workload)
  • Willing and able to participate in the DOT Operator Qualification Program
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Experience with Schneider Modicon PLC systems
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLC systems
  • Experience with Inductive Automation Ignition SCADA system
  • Understanding of Process Control communication systems (Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP)
  • Experience working with instrumentation equipment (temperature, pressure, flow, level transmitters, etc.)
  • Experience with DTN Guardian3 Host systems
  • Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems and Hazard Analysis Methods
  • Familiarity with Reliability Engineering concepts
  • Experience supporting the petrochemicals industry and/or fuel and asphalt terminals
  • Experience with NFPA 70E and Electrical Safe Work Programs
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NFPA 70)
  • Experience with systems administration (managing hardware and software, security, and specifications)
  • Previous experience in SQL database systems (Oracle, MySQL, Maria

    DB, MSSQL)
  • The ability to develop scripts for automation (Batch, Power Shell, Python, Perl, Bash)
Salary and Variable Pay

For this role, we anticipate paying $100,000 – $150,000 per year. The position is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
