Position: Highway/ Roadway Project Engineer

What You Will Do

As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking an emerging Highway/Roadway Project Engineer to support our Transportation group in Wichita, KS. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days of onsite office attendance.

Working on the roadway team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. Whether working on highways and bridges or traffic engineering, our team excels in resilient, sustainable design and construction, delivering innovative solutions that address the complexities of modern, multimodal roadway systems and ensure safe, efficient, and reliable travel for all.

Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support.
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages.
  • Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers on project assignments.
  • Attend internal and external meetings with the team.
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers.
  • Coordinate the planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, and quality control of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff.
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost, and scheduling performance.
  • Lead projects and complete tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
  • Project QA/QC.
  • Assist project managers with various other tasks.
  • Ability to multi‑task and manage workload on various projects simultaneously.
  • Initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Kansas; additional state licensure is a plus.
  • 8-12 years of engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design.
  • Experience with State DOT and/or local municipality/county design projects.
  • Proficient in Micro Station, Open Roads, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, self-starter, demonstrated organization skills, team player, and willingness to learn.
Compensation

The salary range for this role is $90,000 – $115,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
