Distribution Design Engineer

Under minimal direction, Project Engineers liaise between company distribution, transmission, substation, standards and planning engineers, operations craft and management, and external parties as needed including residential, commercial, and industrial customers, consultant engineers, and project managers. Project Engineers engage project stakeholders to transform engineering concepts into organized, actionable, and safely constructable designs focused on affordability, reliability, and sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration with various functional groups, both internal and external to Evergy
  • Coordination/deconfliction with other public and private utilities and infrastructure
  • Identification of real-estate survey and easement acquisition needs
  • Application of company construction standards, and policies and procedures to assigned projects
  • Review and interact with project plan and profile drawings
  • Field observations and creative thinking to create the most effective solution
  • Calculate or interpret electric and mechanical loads to size facilities
  • Estimate labor hours and cost details to perform construction projects
  • Create job maps complete with instructions to field personnel
  • Calculate company revenue justification and required customer contributions
  • Define and support project requirements for permitting and real estate needs
  • Field stake or validate staked project work locations
  • Active and real-time problem solver for field personnel during project construction

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. The preferred candidate will have 3-5 years of industry experience.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Required:

    Excellent written and verbal communication, foundational project management and coordination, planning, organizing, and time management, problem-solving, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams (or similar)
  • Preferred:
    Mathematics, engineering statics and mechanics of materials, technical reading, electrical theory, CAD and GIS, land and construction surveying

Physical Requirements:

Job includes, but is not limited to hearing, seeing, walking long distances on uneven terrain, talking, reading, typing, writing, color distinction, depth perception, working outside in adverse conditions, and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, etc.

Licenses, Certification, Bonding, and/or Testing:

Requires a valid Driver's License.

Working Conditions:

Most work is performed in an office with field work as necessary. Occasional travel to other locations within the company is required. Position requires work beyond normal business hours depending on workload, project deadlines, and service restoration efforts. Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
