As a Community Service Officer with the City of Wichita Police Department
, you play a vital role in maintaining safety, trust, and order within our community. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for assisting a variety of vehicle accidents.
  • Enforces ordinances related to parking, abandoned vehicles, and helps stranded motorists.
  • Performs traffic control duties.
  • Assists with special community events.
  • Prepares reports related to traffic accidents, abandoned vehicles, daily activities, and assists with DUI's and other minor offenses.
  • Responsible for taking reports of various types of cases that come into the station such as accident reports, as well as reports of vandalism, and thefts.
  • Appears in court to present evidence and testify as required.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.
  • Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains community relations.
  • May be required to handle animal control issues.
  • May be required to submit evidence as part of investigations.
  • May respond to transport a combative prisoner in the Van.
  • Will be required to carry self‑protection tools, wear a bullet resistant vest, duty belt, and AXON.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience involving public contact; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possess a standard high school diploma (or equivalent GED)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
  • Ability to deal firmly, professionally, and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action.
  • Must not be impaired from testifying credibly in a court of law or impaired from swearing to an affidavit.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Intoxilyzer Certification.
  • Must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License.
  • Must maintain confidentiality in the performance of their duties.
  • May require the ability to lift and move up to 50‑lb. loads.
  • Required to be proficient with applicable use of force guidelines.
  • Must complete required training at the Law Enforcement Training Center.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • At the time of completing this application, candidates must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience in customer service demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills in handling public inquiries and resolving issues.
  • One (1) year of experience preparing comprehensive reports that accurately capture essential information, demonstrating attention to detail and clarity in documentation.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
  • Attainment of passing scores on pre‑employment tests. Candidates with the required experience and training will be required to take the following assessments:
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • One (1) year of experience in a law enforcement, security, or public safety environment.
  • One (1) year of experience in radio communication systems or public safety software applications.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre‑employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
