Position: Custodian 1

Job Title

2:00 PM–10:30 PM)

Position Function

The primary job of the Custodian is to assist custodial staff in providing a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. The custodian performs a variety of custodial tasks and may assist in supervising temporary staff.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Perform daily duties in assigned areas such as dusting flat surfaces, emptying wastebaskets, sweeping floors, straightening desks, mopping or spot‑mopping, cleaning equipment, servicing restrooms, sweeping hallways, stairs, and landings, cleaning gym, locker room, auditorium, and lunchroom.
  • Perform weekly duties such as buffing, high dusting, carpet spotting, replacing light bulbs, stripping, sealing, and waxing floors, washing walls.
  • Perform energy‑management functions as required.
  • Consult with the Building Custodial Supervisor regarding school activities and community use of the building and arrange needed services and cleaning.
  • Respond to office and staff requests for setting up TV, DVR, audio systems, etc.
  • Report maintenance needs or supplies and equipment needs to the Building Custodial Supervisor.
  • Secure the area by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving the building.
  • Remove floor marks and graffiti from walls as needed.
  • Spray‑buff hard‑surface floors as requested.
  • Perform duties related to recycling as requested.
  • Respond to emergencies appropriately.
Additional Duties

Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Equipment

Uses hand tools and power equipment such as brooms, mops, floor‑cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and hand tools. Also uses SMART boards, iPads, computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines as per WPS guidelines.

Travel

Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, and contaminated trash, grasses, and pollens.
  • Must meet the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP), requiring ability to climb stairs and ladders, exert 50–100 lb occasionally, 25–50 lb frequently, 10–20 lb constantly, and perform squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling as described.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Completion of Proficiency of Custodial Operations certificate preferred.
  • Customer‑service orientation and ability to handle diverse populations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Fluency in customer interactions and maintaining a friendly professional manner.
Interrelations
  • Contact personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Work under direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete day‑to‑day tasks.
  • Handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Respond appropriately to customer needs.
  • Interact with internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive service.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • Perform all assigned duties and work scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless approved leave is received.
  • Seek prior approval from supervisor or building administrator for any deviation from assigned hours.
  • Report to work dressed in a manner reflecting a positive image of USD 259 and appropriate for the position.
Qualification Profile
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Completion of Proficiency of Custodial Operations certificate preferred.
