Job Summary

To plan and perform heat treat, age harden, conductivity and hardness testing on steel and aluminum aircraft parts. Responsible for the safe operation of all equipment in the work area. May be required to assist lower grade operators.

Responsibilities
  • Work from shop routers, specifications, and standard detailed instructions to plan and perform heat treating operations, including annealing, tempering, normalizing and/or age on a wide variety of aircraft parts.
  • Determine the proper operation sequence and control settings (temperature, soak time, type of atmosphere, and vacuum); based on cross referencing the shop routers/specifications/part geometry and engineering drawings. Heat treat parts to these required specifications utilizing established operating procedures.
  • Set up and operate heat treating equipment such as generators, infra-analyzer, and atmospheric control tempering furnaces or vacuum furnaces. May input sequence of events in work center console.
  • Select and position parts in racks according to size, shape, alloy and number to be heat treated and visually inspect to ensure warpage is kept to a minimum. Ensure holding fixtures are of noncontaminative materials.
  • Determine how parts should be loaded to ensure proper alignment of brazed parts and keep warpage to a minimum. Select proper filler alloy, prepare joints, and apply braze to joint per engineering drawing and specification requirements.
  • Maintain records on a variety of aircraft parts according to date, time, dew point reading, lot number and temperature.
  • Measure conductivity and/or hardness of material following heat treat operations to determine compliance with quality standards
  • Use a variety of equipment, hand tools and precision measuring instruments to complete the work.
  • Visually checks indicator gauges as to temperature and atmospheric conditions in furnaces and ensures that they stay within specification limits during heat treat process.
  • Responsible for quality of own work.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education

Must have a high school diploma, an equivalent certificate, or a bronze level Work Keys certification.

Experience

Requires a minimum three years of heat treat experience. Required to successfully complete and maintain required certifications and training.

Working Conditions

Disagreeable working conditions due to heat, fumes and exposure to hot oils and open flames.
