5 Axis CNC Machinist / Operator
This role focuses on setting up and operating 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC machines to produce precision components for aerospace, space, military, and related industries. You will use advanced machining technology and precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet strict customer specifications, while contributing to continuous improvement of machining processes. Openings are available on multiple shifts, with primary operational needs on 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Responsibilities- Set up and operate a variety of 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC machines, cutters, and work-holding tools to produce precision parts according to specifications.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, portable CMM, and FARO arms.
- Machine parts to exact specifications using 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC equipment and follow established setup documentation.
- Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines in accordance with setup instructions.
- Measure, examine, and test completed parts using micrometers, calipers, FARO arms, height gauges, go/no-go gauges, air gauges, and other precision tools to ensure conformance to customer requirements.
- Monitor machine feed rates, speeds, and indicators during machining to maintain proper operation and part quality.
- Maintain CNC machines and related tools in proper operational condition, including performing routine maintenance and replacing worn components.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine product requirements and verify conformance.
- Operate inspection and production equipment to verify operational efficiency and identify issues.
- Diagnose machine tool malfunctions and determine appropriate adjustments or repairs to restore proper operation.
- Collaborate with engineering, supervisory, and inspection personnel to verify technical information and resolve machining or quality issues.
- Fit and assemble fixtures and cutters to manufacture or repair customer products as needed.
- Handle, move, and stage product using pallet jacks or forklifts to designated areas in the production environment.
- Assemble and disassemble electromechanical, hydraulic systems, machine tools, parts, and fixtures for production or maintenance.
- Dispose of scrap and waste materials in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations, including separating materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal.
- Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications to improve efficiency, quality, or adaptability in alignment with Kaizen and continuous improvement processes.
- Check equipment and work areas for safety hazards using a 6S checklist and follow established safety and housekeeping standards.
- Verify calibration, offsets, and alignment of production equipment and confirm certification status of inspection equipment.
- Use analytical and industrial control software, including CNC editing tools, to adjust programs and machine parameters as needed.
- Apply active learning, critical thinking, mathematics, and problem-solving skills to address machining challenges and improve processes.
- Communicate effectively with team members through speaking and writing to convey technical information, status updates, and improvement ideas.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 6 months of machining experience as a minimum requirement.
- 1–2 years of experience running 3, 4, and 5 axis numerical control machines is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC machining, including setup and operation.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, FARO arms, and go/no-go gauges.
- Experience operating CNC machines with Fanuc-based controls, Haas controls, Siemens-based controls, and Mazak controls.
- Ability to calculate dimensions and tolerances and apply mathematics to solve machining problems.
